The RTA checks insurance validity during registration renewal, along with technical inspection when required. Review the procedure for your vehicle before planning when to drive it. Ask the insurer to confirm validity dates and transmission of the necessary details to the RTA.
Distinguish two types of protection
Motor third-party liability concerns covered damage to third parties. Loss and damage cover concerns the insured vehicle, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions. The Central Bank publishes separate unified policies for these scopes. The term “comprehensive” does not mean every event or use is covered.
Compare equivalent cover
Ask about insured value, deductibles, repair arrangements, eligible garages and any replacement-car terms. Clarify towing, authorised drivers and restrictions linked to age or driving experience. For trips outside the UAE or off-road driving, obtain an explicit answer rather than assuming an extension applies. Compare total premiums including taxes and options.
Plan the full cost of mobility
Alongside insurance, budget for buying or leasing the vehicle, maintenance, fuel, parking and tolls on your routes. Check the parking spaces attached to your home and test the school journey at relevant times. For a rental car, review the rental agreement: identify the excess, additional-driver terms and included cover separately.
A common question
Is the lowest premium the best choice?
Compare cover and deductibles first. A lower premium may reflect a different scope or a higher amount to pay yourself.
